The Chittenden Family

Welcome to the web site for the Chittenden family ex-Zimbabwe & South Africa.

The site is regularly updated and is for the whole family to use, so please send in any news or photographs from your part of the world.

Some wise bloke once said that you can't see where you're going without first knowing where you've been. This is a somewhat disjointed map of our various comings and goings, and an attempt by us baby-boomers and generation x-ers at celebrating Chittendens and family past, present and future.

Apologies to both our readers for being unable to update the site for 3 weeks while Bigpond blundered around trying to reinstate our service. We would appear to be back on line at last - perhaps they called in the competition to sort things out for them...

MAY 2008

A very happy birthday to our May baby - BRUCE BARKER, on the 30th. May's birthstone is the Emerald, and flower the Lily.

There's been a bit of musical houses in Aus recently - TRACY & KIM have moved upstate for Tracy to take up her new position with Bendigo Health, and SCOTT & MEGAN have moved into the family pad in Mount Eliza. New address details and contact numbers are in the Contacts section.

Photographs of OLIVER HARRY CHITTENDEN are now in the Photo's section.

It's a boy! To EMBER and ANDREW a son, OLIVER HARRY CHITTENDEN (not Joey, as has been suggested the son of a Roo should be called...) at 01.00 am this morning, weighing spot on 8 pounds and after a determined battle to stay put. A bloody-minded Chittenden from the start! Welcome to our world Ollie, warm congratulations to the proud parents, and much love to the three of you. Photographs coming shortly...

FEBRUARY 2008

Well into the new year and accelerating towards Christmas already! Happy Birthday and our very best wishes to our February Chittenden babies: EMBER (4th) and CYNDY (24th). Our congratulations too go to ANDREW and EMBER CHITTENDEN on their wedding anniversary on the 17th - by the size of The Bump their anniversary could be one of soft food and smelly nethers rather than soft music and scented candles! And we have fondest memories of HILARY and ROLY BARKER on what would have been their 40th anniversary on the 10th.

JANUARY 2008

There are new mobile phone numbers for Geoff & Cyndy and for Megan Chittenden in the My Contacts section, together with a few new Christmas mug shots in the Photographs page.

2nd October 2007

ANDREW & EMBER CHITTENDEN have announced the pending arrival of a new Chittenden, e.t.a. Bendigo Australia on February 22nd 2008! There's already a photograph of The Bump on Facebook, and can be seen in the photo's section.

MITCH & HARRY CHITTENDEN have at last had a phone installed at their cottage. Details are on the Contacts page, and their postal address remains the same. Thanks to Bruce & Robyn for sending some updated photos of the wrinklies, which are included in the Photos page.

I have just received a book entitled "South Africa, A Series of Pencil Sketches by William M Timlin". It has an introduction written by GILBERT E CHITTENDEN. This would be Gilbert Evan Chittenden, son of Alfred Chittenden and therefore nephew of William Darlington Chittenden who was grandfather to Reg and Harry.Gilbert was born in Klerksdorp on January 1, 1892, married twice and died on 13 April 1948. A copy of his introduction to the sketches is in the History section on the website. Anyone wanting copies of Timlin's sketches, please let me know.

A few new photographs now in the Family Album photo section - Scott, Megs, Kim & Tracy in the snow just 2 hours from home. After the African bush, a novel experience for the two new Aussies-in-training who can now add cross-country ski experts to their cv's! Scott & Megs' wedding photographs have had to be culled rather mercilessly to make way for new material, but there is a shortcut to the full album in the My Favourite Websites section.

21 February 2007

From time to time I wake up remembering some tantalising odds and ends of a particularly vivid dream the night before. Today being the birthday of a nasty head of state and a cause of expensive enforced celebration in his country, perhaps this recent little ditty from The Dreamtime may give some hope of a reckoning for the fellow:

"ODE TO BOB -

Five hundred thousand tortured souls

Lie waiting in the dark

For midnight

Is the high noon of the damned".

SCOTT and MEGAN have returned to Australia from honeymoon, and thank all their friends and family for making December 16 such a loving and memorable day. A selection of more professional photographs is now in the Photos section, but the happy couple have asked if anyone has any of their own photographs or video to please send them a copy.

MITCH & HARRY have handed down a number of old family photograph albums. These include some of Harry's WW2 days in the desert and Gold Coast, the Bain, Oakley and Smith families around Rhodesia in the early 1900's, and several of VE Day in Salisbury. Some are annotated with names of various people and places and may prove invaluable to other family members and researchers. I'm looking at how to scan the several hundred photographs into the website without crashing the system and "may be some time", but if you have any specific requests please contact me and I'll do my best to find what you're looking for. There are a few samples in the Photo's section to whet your appetites...

More sad news is that our muchly loved HILARY BARKER passed away in the late hours of Wednesday 15 November. She had been taken to hospital earlier in the week with lung and heart failure from her progressive muscle weakness. She went quickly and peacefully, and is at last in no more pain and joins her beloved Roly. The touching and well-attended funeral was held on the 22nd, with a memorial held by Wits University a week later . Our love and thoughts go to Bruce, Colleen and family.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
2006 has indeed been a very sad year. NAN CHITTENDEN passed away at 10.15 am on Thursday 21 September at BS Leon Hospital in Harare, aged 86. By all accounts she went peacefully and quickly, yet our own sadness is no less for it. The little lady with an enormous heart, Nan was the Mother Theresa of the Chittenden family. She will be sorely missed by us all and by the countless others in charity organisations such as Island Hospice where her tireless energies and devotion to others made such an impact.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

It is with great sorrow that we note the sad passing of ROLY BARKER at 8.30 pm on Wednesday 26 July. Devoted husband and captain of the ship to Hillary, loving dad to Colleen and Bruce, Roly suffered a heart attack over a week earlier and never recovered from complications after the ensuing triple bypass operation. Larger than life, a battler and obstinate to the end, he will be hugely missed by family and friends. Our thoughts and love go to them all. His eulogy by his daughter Colleen is in the History section.
